Cary's holidays happen in two places this year, and the two keep different hours. At Koka Booth Amphitheatre, the North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival opens nightly from Nov. 21, 2026, through Jan. 10, 2027, closing only on Christmas Day. Downtown, the town's free Heart of the Holidays events are packed mostly into the 16 days from Dec. 5 to Dec. 20.
The lanterns run nearly every night for weeks, and most of the downtown events land on a few fixed dates. That makes the lantern trip the easy one to move. Pick your downtown dates first, then fit the lanterns into an open weeknight.
This is the festival's 11th year at Koka Booth, 8003 Regency Parkway. In its August announcement, the amphitheatre called it a seven-week event. Last season was promoted as an eight-week run, from Nov. 15, 2025, to Jan. 11, 2026. This year it opens six days later and closes one day earlier.
There's still plenty of room in the schedule. The festival's official page lists hours of 6 to 10 p.m. daily, closed on Christmas Day. The amphitheatre says Chinese artisans are building all-new displays, each made of hundreds of individual pieces lit by thousands of LED lights, with cultural arts performances on the main stage every night.
Holiday nights run on different hours:
Thanksgiving falls on Nov. 26 this year, the first Thursday of the run, so it's one of the shorter nights.
There are three ticket types. Evening Session tickets are for one specific night, 6 to 10 p.m. Twilight Session tickets let you in at 4:30 p.m. for what the venue calls "Golden Hour," and the venue suggests arriving by 5:30. Any Night tickets work on any festival evening, and the venue suggests them as gifts. Children 2 and under get in free with every ticket type.
CBS 17 reported in August that 2026 Evening Session tickets cost $19.32 to $27.56 Sunday through Thursday and $25.50 to $34 on Friday and Saturday, depending on date and age. Any Night tickets cost $44.46. At the top of each range, a Friday or Saturday ticket costs $6.44 more than a weeknight one.
The festival's rules also tilt toward weeknights and buying ahead:
The calmest night on the schedule is Tuesday, Dec. 1, a sensory-friendly night with quieter music, reduced attendance, no strobe or flashing lights, and a designated Quiet Area.
The amphitheatre has about 1,500 free parking spaces in its own lots. Preferred parking costs $10 in advance or $15 on the night. Dinner can happen inside the grounds. The Lantern Street Cafe menu lists loaded fries, a Shanghai Street Dog, a char siu pork rice bowl, miso ramen, a Dragon Fire chicken sandwich, crab rangoon, Chinese donuts and spiked hot chocolate. Food trucks are added on Fridays and Saturdays.
Downtown works differently. The Town of Cary's Heart of the Holidays page lists free events, and most of them are tied to a single date or a short window. The town's Letters to Santa listing runs earliest, from Nov. 16 to Dec. 6, and the Santa Mailbox is at Downtown Cary Park. Nearly everything else starts on or after Dec. 5.
| Date | Event | Where | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nov. 16 to Dec. 6 | Letters to Santa | Santa Mailbox, Downtown Cary Park | Ongoing |
| Sat., Dec. 5 | Tree Lighting Celebration | Downtown Cary Park, 327 S. Academy St. | 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., ceremony at 6 p.m. |
| Sat., Dec. 5 | Victorian Christmas | Page-Walker Arts & History Center | 2 to 5 p.m. |
| Dec. 5 to 13 | Gingerbread Competition | Downtown Cary | Ongoing |
| Dec. 5 to 20 | Gifting Tree Project | Downtown Cary | Ongoing |
| Mon., Dec. 7 | Hanukkah Menorah Lighting | Great Lawn Pavilion, Downtown Cary Park | 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. |
| Sat., Dec. 12 | Cary Jaycees Christmas Parade | Downtown Cary Park | 2 to 4 p.m. |
The Menorah Lighting falls on the third night of Hanukkah, with a kids' activity, holiday music and a sweet treat before the lighting. The Cary Jaycees organize the parade.
Together, the two schedules show where your free nights are. Apart from the Letters to Santa mailbox, which you can visit at any time, downtown has no scheduled weeknight events between the lantern opening on Nov. 21 and the Dec. 7 Menorah Lighting. That leaves those weeknights free for the lanterns at weeknight prices. The busier downtown dates, Dec. 5, 7 and 12, are the ones to protect.
On Saturday, Dec. 5, every part of the season is underway at once. The Gingerbread Competition and Gifting Tree Project open downtown, the Tree Lighting runs all day, Victorian Christmas fills the afternoon at the Page-Walker, and the lanterns are lit at Koka Booth that evening. A full day could look like this:
Twilight tickets aren't available on Thanksgiving or Christmas Eve, so if you want the 4:30 p.m. early entry on a weekend, December weekends outside the downtown dates are the best fit.
The new restaurants matter most on the downtown dates. Several places within reach of Downtown Cary Park opened in late August and September, so this is their first holiday season.
Axios Raleigh reported that Lloyd's Full Service opened Aug. 26 at 107 E. Chatham St., in a restored former service station with a patio. A few doors down, K38 Baja Grill opened its first Cary location at 147 E. Chatham St. The News & Observer gave its opening date as Aug. 29. Lawrence Barbecue is listed at 150 E. Cedar St. with a Sept. 19 opening on the NC Triangle Dining tracker.
More is on the way for this stretch of Chatham. WRAL reported in August that Doherty's Irish Pub & Restaurant leased the former Spirits Pub & Grub space at 701 E. Chatham St., with no opening date announced.
On the busy downtown dates, these restaurants will compete for tables with everyone else in town for the tree lighting. Booking dinner on East Chatham before the 6 p.m. ceremony on Dec. 5, or before the 5:30 p.m. Menorah Lighting on Dec. 7, is the part of the plan that can't wait until that day.
